Braised Vegetarian Meatball in Brown Sauce

Meatballs are known as a comforting dish usually paired with pasta. However, there’s various ways to prepare meatballs including vegetarian options! Braised Meatball in Brown Sauce is considered one of the most popular traditional Chinese cuisines. Moreover, the Chinese version of Meatballs are very soft and delicious. In this month’s blog, we are going to share the vegetarian version of this flavorful meatball recipe that only uses tofu and some simple seasonings. It tastes 99.9% like a meat-based meatball and is a healthier option too! This traditional Chinese version “braised pork ball in brown sauce” will pair well with rice.
Ingredients:
Meatball Stuffing:
½ package Nature’s Soy Firm Tofu, pressed and mashed
1 Cup Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs
5 minced Shiitake Mushrooms
Minced Carrot as needed
Minced Ginger as needed
2 Teaspoons of Five Spice Powder
2 Teaspoons White Pepper
2 Teaspoons Cornstarch
1 Teaspoon Granulated Onion Powder
1 piece of green onion, chopped
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 Teaspoon Salt
One bowl of Low-Gluten Flour
Sauce:
1 Teaspoon Vegan Oyster Sauce
1 Teaspoons Soy Sauce
1 Teaspoon Corn Starch
½ Teaspoon Sugar
2 Cups of Vegetarian Stock
Others:
5 Whole Pieces Shiitake Mushrooms
½ Carrot cut in pieces
6 Pieces Baby Bok Choy
Steps:
1. Mix the tofu with the stuffing ingredients listed above and shape into a ball and dip into flour.
2. Air fry the tofu meatball for 15 mins on 375 F.
3. In an empty pot, simmer all other ingredients for the sauce for 5 minutes. When the sauce starts to thicken, add the air fried meatball and other ingredients to the the pot. Coat the meatball with the sauce and boil for another 2 minutes.
4. Place in a bowl and enjoy your delicious vegetarian meatball!
